It´s almost nine pm here in San José, Costa Rica, and I´m asking my Innovation students what are their favorite apps or websites for corporate or personal communications. So the last twenty minutes of our class they will share their digital taste. These are millennials and gen X´s, so their apps may not be the usual.
Carlos, a journalist and entrepreneur, suggests Periscope, a free app that allows users to make inexpensive live videos, with nothing but a smart phone. It used to take TV networks a lot of equipment; money and a full crew to broadcast live; now according to Carlos anyone can become a live reporter.
Daniela, Carlos sister, and our brand new sales executive, recommends Zello, a sort of “walkie talkie” that can´t be blocked by conventional means. Venezuelan students used Zello to communicate what was going on during street riots.
Javier, and engineer from the Costa Rican Central Bank likes Firechat, an app that allows a group of people to communicate even without an internet connection. Firechat uses the built in radio in your phone and messages can travel up to 70 meters (210 feet).
Marco from HP tells us they use Aurasma, an augmented reality app that allows a person to scan an image and then use it to trigger a video or another image to other people.
Let us go back to Daniela. She introduced our company to Trello, an app that was recently presented to her that is great for teamwork. It works great with horizontal teams, helping communicate, oversee tasks, create checklists, add comments, etc. I personally find it great. Thanks Daniela for bringing Trello to PXS.
Marco from BAC, the largest bank in the country, favors the more traditional GoToMeeting and WebEx as great tools for his company.
José Manuel, a recent CSSBB, also from BAC, recommends Scannable among the apps to scan documents with a smart phone.
Just as we were leaving, Carlos and Daniela reminded me that Saturday I´m supposed to choose the music for the new PXS video using Jamendo, a website full of CC (Creative Commons) music.
